This is not just a strategy, but our philosophy, our understanding of the world, and our commitment to future generations. We believe that sustainability is not just a goal, but a way of life and development that should be at the core of every modern enterprise.
In today’s world, sustainability is not just a trend, but a necessity. Climate change, increasing pollution, and the inefficient use of natural resources pose serious challenges to humanity. Global economies, industries, and society face the critical question: How can we combine economic growth with a responsible approach to nature? The answer lies in change – in transitioning to eco-friendly practices, in developing innovations, and in the sustainable use of resources.
We strive to be a green company and believe that business should not be part of the problem, but part of the solution. That’s why the foundation of our activity is our commitment to ecology, reducing our carbon footprint, and implementing ESG principles (environmental, social, and corporate governance). We believe that every aspect of our work – from the choice of technologies to how we deliver our products – should be in harmony with nature.
Our principles include minimizing waste, energy efficiency, and social responsibility. We work hard to create a business model that not only maintains profitability but also contributes to a cleaner and greener world. We introduce innovations that allow us to achieve higher efficiency with less environmental impact.
One of the biggest environmental issues in the food industry is the use of refrigerants in cooling systems. Freon is a gas used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems as a coolant. Although effective, it has a high potential impact on global warming and the depletion of the ozone layer. Due to these environmental consequences, its use is restricted by international agreements such as the Montreal Protocol, which encourages its replacement with safer alternatives like carbon dioxide (CO₂).
Our company chooses an eco-friendly refrigerant. We have an innovative refrigeration system that operates with carbon dioxide (CO₂) – a natural gas with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 1, compared to Freon’s 3,800 GWP. This allows us to reduce carbon emissions and apply sustainable technologies that help decrease the ecological footprint in the industrial sector.
But sustainability doesn’t stop at refrigeration systems. The process of freezing food generates a large amount of waste heat – energy that would usually be lost. We have found a way to harness it – we use it in both our production processes and for energy needs in our facilities. In this way, we not only reduce energy costs but also utilize resources in the most efficient manner.
The global industry generates vast amounts of waste every day, and improper management leads to environmental pollution. At Bels, we recognize the importance of the circular economy – a model where resources are used as efficiently as possible, and waste is minimized. In Bulgaria, the concept of the circular economy is just beginning to gain popularity, but we have long integrated it into our business model, actively seeking ways to minimize waste and optimize its reuse.
In this regard, we have implemented a waste separation and recycling system that allows us to reduce the amount of material sent to landfills.
Composting organic waste is an important part of our waste reduction plan. This is the process of biologically breaking down organic waste, converting it into compost – a valuable resource that enriches the soil. This is achieved through a controlled process in which microorganisms decompose organic waste in the presence of oxygen. Composting reduces the amount of waste while simultaneously reducing methane emissions that would otherwise be generated when organic waste is disposed of in landfills.
Recycling paper reduces the need for wood and lowers pollution, while saving energy and reducing carbon emissions. We have a special press for recycling paper, which is used to compact collected paper, optimizing the processing process and making transportation and storage easier before it is sent for further processing.
Recycling plastic in industry is essential. Its processing reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions, while also providing new materials for the production of various products. For effective waste management, we have a plastic waste press – it is used to compress the waste into compact bales, which facilitates their transportation and storage.
To properly carry out these operations, we ensure that our staff is trained and that every step of the waste management process is performed with attention to sustainability. We encourage greater environmental responsibility and strive to inform every employee about the best practices in waste separation, recycling, and waste reduction, which has a long-term positive effect on the planet.
The world is facing an energy crisis, and dependence on fossil fuels remains one of the biggest challenges to sustainable development. That is why we have taken an important step toward energy independence by investing in the construction of our own photovoltaic plant. Thanks to this system, a significant portion of the electricity required for our operations comes from renewable sources.
By storing energy efficiently through a battery storage system, we reduce our dependence on the grid and minimize carbon emissions. This not only allows us to reduce our costs but also contributes to the global transition to cleaner energy solutions.
Our mission is not limited to environmentally friendly production – it also encompasses the products we offer. We believe that sustainable nutrition is the key to a healthier future. Frozen fruits and vegetables provide the perfect balance between quality, nutritional value, and minimal food waste.
According to data from the UN, about 30% of the food produced worldwide is wasted, which represents a huge resource and environmental problem. Freezing significantly extends the shelf life of products, reducing the need for food disposal. Moreover, our frozen fruits and vegetables retain up to 98% of their nutrients, without the need for preservatives or artificial additives. This makes them not only a more eco-friendly but also a healthier alternative.
The global trend is clear – sustainable development is no longer a choice, but an obligation. Business has the power to drive change, but it cannot happen without the active participation of consumers. Every decision we make – from what products we buy to how we manage our resources – impacts the environment.
That is why we invite you to be part of this change. By supporting companies that invest in green technologies and sustainable practices, you are not only making a responsible choice for yourself but also contributing to the preservation of the planet. Every small gesture matters. We have committed to nature, people, and the future. Join us in this mission – because every action counts.
